
All passengers and crew members of the Trigana Air ATR 42-500 (PK-YSP) that skidded off the runway at Stevanus Rumbewas Airport in the Yapen Islands, Papua, have been safely transported to the hospital.
The flight was carrying 41 adults, one infant, and six crew members en route to Sentani Airport in Jayapura, Papua’s capital.
“They have been evacuated to Serui Regional General Hospital for treatment of injuries and trauma resulting from the incident,” said Kusworo, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), on Monday.
Kusworo confirmed that the local SAR team on-site ensured all passengers were safe, with no fatalities reported.
Irwan Rochendi, Trigana Air’s Deputy Area Manager, stated that the incident occurred around 10:35 a.m. local time.The airline noted that the aircraft, which had a baggage capacity of 270 kilograms, sustained significant damage.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, though the airline confirmed the aircraft was in proper condition before takeoff.
“We are awaiting further information from the pilot to determine what caused the aircraft to skid,” said Captain Lalu Yuniza, Trigana Air’s Director of Safety, Security, and Quality.
A report from the Transportation Ministry revealed the aircraft began taxiing at 10:35 a.m. but skidded off the runway approximately 1,200 meters from the starting point, just one minute after beginning its movement.
