Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, engages with an artist in Yogyakarta on July 7, 2024.
Puan Maharani, Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), emphasized on Sunday the importance of continued public support for national artworks.
Her statement followed a visit to ARTJOG, an annual contemporary art exhibition, festival, and market held in Yogyakarta.
This year’s ARTJOG is being hosted at the Jogja National Museum from June 28 to September 1, celebrating and supporting the works of Indonesian artists.
“My family and I are avid art enthusiasts, so we greatly enjoy art exhibitions and festivals. ARTJOG is a particularly significant event,” Puan stated in her written remarks.
She expressed admiration for several artists’ works, including interactive installation artworks by Agus Suwage and Tita Rubi.
Suwage’s art features human ear objects symbolizing “listening,” representing tolerance in socially noisy environments.
Tita Rubi’s installations involve various types of rice, accompanied by recordings of prayers from indigenous people, which are played in several rooms.
Puan also viewed works by other artists, including Rangga Purbaya, Eko Prawoto, Haris Purnomo, and young artist Ramadhan Ali Fatkhur.
She highlighted that the 2024 ARTJOG exhibition is not just about showcasing artworks but also serves as a social movement to aid those in need.
The event includes a program named Artcare Indonesia, where all proceeds from the sales of artworks in the Artcare area are donated to those in need, including both artists and the general public.
“This art exhibition is truly significant. It not only pleases our eyes with beautiful and captivating works but also touches our hearts with its social initiatives,” Puan said.
