Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi highlighted the urgent need for global governance reform to address critical global challenges during her speech at the “Summit of the Future” at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Marsudi pointed out that ongoing geopolitical tensions, slow economic recovery, and the climate and energy crises require global cooperation. However, she lamented that trust in multilateralism is diminishing, and its effectiveness is being questioned.
She called for an inclusive, adaptive, and effective global order, emphasizing the need for reforms in the UN Security Council and international financial systems. “We cannot afford to wait any longer. A real reform that listens to the voices of developing countries is essential,” she said.
Marsudi also raised two other key issues. First, she stressed the need for lasting peace, particularly concerning the Palestinian conflict, condemning the ongoing actions by Israel. “The ongoing genocide by Israel must be stopped immediately,” she declared.
Second, she called for protecting every nation’s right to development, urging that all countries, especially those in the Global South, should be free from trade discrimination and debt traps. Without addressing these concerns, she warned, some nations will inevitably fall behind.
Marsudi urged that these pressing issues must be prioritized, and called for the Summit of the Future to be a turning point in building a more sustainable and equitable global future.
