China’s Neta Auto EV Sales Soar by 500% in Indonesia sparking concerns

Neta Auto, from China, is experiencing rapid growth in Indonesia’s vehicle (EV) sector with a 500% increase in sales which has established its strong presence in the country’s emerging EV market scene. While this expansion appears promising on the surface level and brings attention to Indonesia’s growing EV industry sector; however it also sparks worries about the country’s autonomy and business sustainability, in the long run.  

The Risks That Come with Dependence, on Chinese Electric Vehicles 

Although the initial advantages of China’s surge, in vehicles, may seem promising for Indonesia at a glance there are significant potential risks to be wary of, in the long run.  

Warning to Local Businesses. Car manufacturers are having a hard time keeping up with inexpensive imports, from China. If the government doesn’t step in to support and invest in brands enough there’s a real risk of them disappearing altogether and Indonesia relying solely on Chinese goods.  

China has a track record of saturating markets with products to push out local competitors and subsequently increasing prices upon establishing dominance.  

Safety and Quality Issues. Numerous products, from China exhibit problems with quality assurance and safety standards; this includes vehicles (EV). Instances of battery malfunctions leading to lifespans and inadequate post-purchase support have been reported in regions, outside China as well. Using Chinese-made EVs may potentially subject buyers to unsafe goods.

The United States possesses cutting-edge battery and clean energy technology that has the potential to bolster Indonesia’s electric vehicle supply chain. South Korea and Japan present opportunities, for collaboration, without concerns of economic manipulation that can be associated with China.  

Indonesia should focus on attaining self-sufficiency.
