Lake Toba is one of the most remarkable natural wonders in the world, with a vast crater lake featuring an island almost the size of Singapore in its center. Spanning over 1,145 square kilometers and reaching depths of 450 meters, it’s more like an ocean than a lake. It’s the largest lake in Southeast Asia and among the deepest in the world.
A Relaxing Getaway
Lake Toba offers a peaceful retreat, with cool mountain views reflected in the lake’s clear waters. Situated 900 meters above sea level, it provides a refreshing escape from city heat and pollution.
Getting There
You can fly to Lake Toba via two main routes. The first is from Kualanamu International Airport (Medan) to Sisingamangaraja XII International Airport in Siborong-borong. Alternatively, there are direct flights to Sisingamangaraja from Jakarta and other major cities. By land, Parapat, a nearby town, is accessible by bus from Medan or with a rental car.
Exploring Lake Toba
Rent a motorbike and explore the area like a local, especially around Samosir Island. Though some roads are rough, the scenic lake views make it worthwhile. Walking around Tuk Tuk village is another leisurely option.
Things to Do
Enjoy kayaking across different routes, from the easy Tongging-Silalahi route to the more challenging Northern Circle.
Or, opt for luxurious glamping at The Kaldera Nomadic Escape, where you can immerse yourself in nature with comfortable amenities. Discover Batak culture in traditional villages on Samosir Island, with unique architecture, traditional dances, and the intriguing Sigale-gale wooden puppet. Don’t forget to grab some Ulos fabric or Sumatra Mandheling coffee as souvenirs!
